Google will invest up to $40 billion in Anthropic, the companies confirmed on Friday. The number is the story everyone repeated. The structure is the story that matters.
Only $10 billion is committed now, at a $350 billion valuation. The other $30 billion is tied to performance targets, and a large share of the total is not cash at all but Google Cloud TPU capacity: 5 gigawatts over the next five years, on top of an earlier 3.5-gigawatt agreement starting in 2027. So a chunk of Google's "investment" in Anthropic is money Anthropic spends right back at Google.
Why it matters: This is not a $40 billion vote of confidence in Claude. It is a deal engineered so Google profits whether Claude wins or loses, while Anthropic's most important supplier becomes the rival it is racing against.
Google wins on both sides of the table
Google competes directly with Anthropic through Gemini. It is now also Anthropic's landlord. CNBC reported Google is spreading AI bets across multiple investments even as it fields its own frontier model, and the Anthropic deal follows Anthropic's separate partnership with Google and Broadcom for next-generation TPUs.
That dual position is the point, not a quirk. If Claude wins the enterprise market, Google captures value through TPU sales and Vertex AI. If Gemini wins, Google keeps the model revenue. The only outcome Google has hedged out of is the one where it loses.
