DeepSeek has put its V4 preview on chat and app, through its API, with weights posted publicly, carrying a blunt message for the market: million-token context is no longer supposed to feel exotic. The company’s official announcement says V4 is live as V4-Pro and V4-Flash. DeepSeek frames the release around broader access to long context.
That is the useful part of the launch. DeepSeek is still making the usual frontier-model claims, but the buried story is simpler: it is trying to turn a feature that labs often treat as premium into the default surface area for builders.
A long-context launch with actual plumbing
The open-weight side is not just a teaser page. DeepSeek’s V4 collection on Hugging Face lists V4-Pro and V4-Flash, plus their base-model repos, while the V4-Pro model card describes Pro as a 1.6T-parameter mixture-of-experts model with 49B activated parameters. Flash is listed at 284B total parameters with 13B activated.
Those numbers matter because DeepSeek is pairing scale with a clear API pitch. Its models and pricing docs list deepseek-v4-pro and deepseek-v4-flash with 1M context length and 384K maximum output. The docs also show tool calls and compatibility with both OpenAI-format and Anthropic-format access. That makes it a compatibility move aimed at teams already routing workloads through existing SDKs.
Why it matters: Long context only changes builder behavior when it is cheap enough and boring enough to use by default. DeepSeek is pushing that direction, even if the benchmark story still needs outside testing.
